Report of a course
A very dear writer says that it is a book that he would really like to write, and what you will do if that book is not just read, even if that book is one of the classics of universal literature – and at this point, it is a shame that it is publicly acknowledged that that classic of universal literature has not been read so far. But we are among friends, and there is no place for shame – by the way, because in the media there is less and less talk about universal literature that makes Euskera better and better, right? In my discharge I will also say that the film yes, that I saw it at the time – for pure intellectual interest, of course. Conclusion: what difference is there between the film and the book; in favor of the book, of course.
Because the film focuses on a unique aspect of the novel: In Vietnam, under the French colonialism of the 1930s, in the loving relationship between a teenage white girl and a richer and more mature Chinese lover, and in the eroticism that this relationship liberates – don’t forget the sheer intellectual interest of watching the film. Baiki, one of the themes of the novel is this eroticism, more specifically the desire itself – “it is about desire, the desire for affirmation, the desire for liberation, it wants to know life in its entirety, including failure”. But it is only in the intellectual interest that we can justify the fact that the film has been limited to that aspect. Because otherwise, the novel is much richer, much more complex, much more satisfying. Eroticism, desire, initiation into sex, initiation into sex, as innocent as perverted. A relationship between a 15-year-old girl and a young Chinese trader who quickly becomes a social ban and a public scandal. The relationship with people, also with friends, with siblings, especially with the mother: “In the stories about my childhood (…) I would say that I referred to the love we felt for our mother, but I don’t know if I’ve talked about the hatred we felt for her, or the love and hatred we felt for each other.” After all: “We have the story of a learning, no doubt, of a woman who begins to be a woman.”
Prior to the intervention of Rosa de Diego: “The lover, who won the Goncourt Prize in 1984, is a milestone in the writing of Marguerite Dura, both because of the success he had, and because in his literary evolution the path of autobiographical writing began.” Something that has nothing to do with the literature of the writer that you love – and perhaps that is why you would really like to write it, because you will never be able to do so – but that offers more than one level of reading – it is worth, for the sake of mere intellectual interest – that is worth reading.
