Tchaikovsky with twist
The Donostia-San Sebastian Kursaal Foundation presented us with a very nice monograph Tchaikovsky. Universal classics, audience favorites, easy to hear… Safe success. Therefore, there are no problems in getting applause. But in these cases, when traditional repertoire favorites are offered, something else is needed to awaken real interest.
On this occasion, in addition to playing an interesting orchestra, we had two special personalities on the stage: Russian pianist Varvara Nepomniastxaia, a very different musician and director Vladimir Fedoseiev, in her own style, without a doubt. With these ingredients, it was worth the program, whether you liked it or not.
1 de Tchaikovsky Concert for piano and orchestra in itself bemol minor op. 23 is a real candy. Who does not like broad melodies, dreamers, shiny folkloric moments, rhythmic games… It is a hard work for the soloist, and therefore, to get a good interpretation you need a skilled pianist with a great musician. Varvara (this is his artistic name, without a surname) is not a conventional musician, he does not leave the audience indifferent. It has a way to hit nerves, it conveys some anxiety, and that's not entirely bad. Music is violently "bitten". She's a woman of genius. But, on the other hand, this way of playing is dangerous. And that's what we feel when we play this concert. He made a powerful and beautiful entrance. He always gave a passionate speech, but he was often lacking in cleanliness, or the orchestra covered the sound of the piano on other occasions. On the other hand, there was a lack of control to achieve a balance between the orchestra and the soloist. However, as has been said, the public enjoyed it. Varva released a bis: In Bach, Sarabande, handsome, maybe too sweet.
In the second part we hear another classic: a selection of numbers from the ballet The Swan Lake of the same composer. In this work, a special vision of director Vladimir Fedoseiev was perceived. It brought to the limit the character of each party, achieving a genuine stylized interpretation. We heard a smooth and romantic waltz; in the passage of the Pas d’action, the magnificent solo of the concertino stood out, and Fedoseiev gave an intense and demanding rhythm to the number of finalist Scène. They made a couple of tips exactly, like the whole session.
