Take small doses
A truly curious book is what Leire Bilbao and Maite Mutuberria have done; or we should say what they have done, since at the end of last year they presented two books, this one we are now commenting on and the Pizti poems, aimed at slightly larger readers. The book is curious about the simplicity and taste of poems; and it is curious about the weight and importance of images in the design of the book, which together with poems complete, beautify.
The ant is touched with a brief poem as soon as the reader enters the pages, as a prologue to the book: “Ants. / A tropel of ants / through white pages / went / step by step / letter to letter / write this book”. And this is the language that the reader will find in the pages of the book, simple, posed as a game and built around different animales.Comenzamos with alluded poems, then with water poems, Narras-marraz poems and orrolariak poems. And as we have already mentioned, we have protagonists to the owls, the puppies, the shark, the zapaburu, the lion, the snake… The poems are of very different styles, even as far as content is concerned. The snake's, for example, is a comparison: “Snake. / I have a snake in my nose / zig-zag in motion. / Hiding a snake / up and down in the nose. / In the hollow of the nose a snake / as fast as a reptile. / A snake in the nose / goes with me to anywhere. / A snake in the nose hole / I blow my nose and my mom!” Other times, brief, dense and tragic: “Highway. / The frog crosses the road. / The road has crossed the frog.” But there are also some of the shapes of the word chains of popular tradition: “Fear. / mice to cat / cats to dog / dogs to wolf / wolves to the sun / suns to the moon / moons to the mouse”.
They are the poems that can be read; the children in school before they fall asleep at home… and enjoy the images; or like the pintxos of the bars from time to time to bite, read and immerse themselves in Mutuberria’s proposals in the images.
The other day we met some university teachers to talk about children's poetry and some were surprised by the great offer we have. Every year several poetry books are published, offering us a fairly wide collection; unfortunately, some of those wonderful books almost nobody knew them (Ilbet dilindan, Doce dedales, the brilliance of Irrika…) and perhaps there is a failure of our literature, which after publishing beautiful books is lost in the jungle. Fortunately, the innocent know how to advance through the forest; and this book fulfills all the conditions. Come and enjoy, in small doses, these beautiful worms of Leire Bilbao and Maite Mutuberria.
