Job insecurity, accidents at work, social imbalance, greed of capital… could also be annual embarrassment. It's a recurring thing. But the shame of 2016, which affects all of us, whether citizens or institutions, governments or parties, is: The Mediterranean is becoming the grave of thousands of migrants fleeing the wars and famines of their countries.
Last year, we already had the greatest shame. This time, in 2016, in addition to increasing the number of deaths in that sea, European institutions and governments have not fulfilled their commitment to care for migrants. In the central Mediterranean, 4,646 deaths have been recorded, a thousand more than in 2015, resulting in a decrease of 3,522 deaths. Only Italy, in 2016, had to serve more than 180,000 migrants, which is a new record of healthcare. Within this sad statistic are thousands of children.
The greatest shame this year is also the political misery that shows the attitude of the parties and governments. They have missed their commitments and at the same time spent billions of euros on buying arms for the wars that are at the origin of those migrations. As always, capitalism that forgets to invest in poor countries that export only to migrants is also a source of shame, as many of the rich have exploited these places. And we citizens are responsible for this shame, because we often look the other way and support organisations that do not fulfil their commitments.

Toilets are the key to public health and play a... [+]
