Sensitive
According to Wikipedia, sentimentalism was a literary and philosophical movement called Empfindsamkeit by the German writer Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, who also brought religious and moral sentimentalism with him. It was born at the end of the 18th century, against the rationalism of the Enlightenment Age, which began a century ago.
Sentimentalism opened the door to Romanticism and, in addition to the many creators who were part of the sentimentalist movement (Samuel Richardson, Sophie da Roche, Edward Young…), Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe also acted under his influence.
Surely, sentimentalism was necessary to deal with excessive rationalism and to remember that we must also take into account our emotions and feelings, insofar as we are not mere rational animals.
But sentimentalism has risks, if it's excessive.
If the citizens did not live
under a sweetened sentimentalism, we would be more stuck, there would be more charity institutions and organizations.
Although it disappeared long ago as a philosophical movement, sentimentalism has persisted. Moreover, sentimentalism, as it puts sensations and emotions above rational thoughts, now dominates in Western societies and structures of power.
The hyperglycemic ads of television are a reflection of excessive sentimentalism, many onerous solidarity initiatives, especially at Christmas, but not only (and the white calls for mass solidarity, in which often a “small” effort is required or taught) to the citizens, to lucrative companies, to non-profit institutions and governments, to the needs of fair and equitable research of the population, through taxes.
In human nature we are going to be solidary, to feel intimately linked to the peers and all the living beings of the universe. With this evidence, philosophical sentimentalism formulated the ethical requirements of human beings.
Now capitalism is trying to manipulate the real sensations and the original tendencies of human beings and make us believe things that are less just, above all logic and every human sense like feelings. If the citizens did not live in an atmosphere of sugary sensuality, we would be more closely bound, and we would not allow the richest to flee so easily from their benefits that they had the obligation to allocate what they need to meet the needs of society. And there would be more charities and institutions.
