“I’ve made this film to break the silence around the atomic war,” says John Pilger. The Coming War on China is Pilger's 60th documentary, a reference documentary born in Australia in 1939 and currently living in Britain, and we will have to wait a bit to see it in French or Spanish.
Since he sent chronicles of the Vietnam War to very early ages, veteran Pilger has known wars and conflicts around the world closely and from within. At the age of 77, he continues to have the energy to write, make a documentary and give lectures in the places he is called.
It explains the "wars that are coming against China," the military forces of the sea and the air that the United States is doing. United States organized by Asia and the Pacific and destined for China. The film also deals with the propaganda and provocations used by the dominant power. “The media tell us that China is threatening the entire region, building airstrips on several islands, but they hide from us that the United States has already surrounded China with 400 military bases, with missiles, planes and warships containing them, until it is completed with what a military strategist has called ‘birch thorn’.”
The film is part of the Marshall Islands. According to the sarcastic of Pilger, today everyone mentions bikinis and understands the suit of two short pieces of women, he has forgotten that he was given the name of the island of Bikini precisely because with the atomic bombs that the Americans were throwing there they would discover the bones of the people.
Since then, a large number of H bombs erupted in the Marshall Islands, composing together a terrible capacity for destruction: It's like a Hiroshima bomb that crashed every day for 12 years. An entire nation, the Marshall became the target of the atomic war, in which the United States built one of the most secret military bases.
Pilger wants to bring to light the silence that has spread to the possibility of nuclear war. For some of the military strategists he has interviewed for the documentary, because the atomic war is not impossible to imagine, it is something that can happen. But the world felt the nuclear threat near the Cold War, “on this occasion the fronts are not so clearly marked and the risks are much greater.”
For two years, Pilger has been rolling "the war that is coming against China," on five of the fronts he believes to be the warmest between China and the United States. The United States, picking up fundamental facts that we supposedly don't know about the citizens we know about the march of the world.
For example, our major media have taught us time and again the Spratly Islands, which China has for itself in conflict with the Philippines. But we have not had too many allusions to the military manoeuvres Talisman Saber, which the United States and Australia have jointly organised since 2005, on six occasions. The latest edition, that of 2015, was one of the largest ever since the end of the Cold War and in which tests were carried out to close the Malacca Strait, i.e. to cut off ships that bring oil to China, gas and raw materials of all kinds, both in the Middle East and in Africa.
Nuclear in the event of war
Pilger has also gathered views from several Chinese experts, as is often seen on many occasions. A Chinese strategist said: “We are not your enemies, but if you decide that we are like that, then we will have to prepare ourselves right away.” Recently, according to Pilger, China has raised the alert level of its nuclear weapons to a higher level.
Ted Postol, U.S. Navy Scientific Advisor and Atomic Weapons Expert, has explained the atmosphere among the military in recent years: ‘Here everyone wants to show that they are tough. Well, I'm really tough, I'm not afraid to do anything in military matters, I'm not afraid to threaten it, I'm a proud fat guy. EE.UU. They're constantly dancing swords, and they love that from above."
One of them is Andrew Krepinevich, who worked in the planning of the Pentagon war and who is not afraid of war. It wants to punish China for having deployed its defensive lines south. It proposes to fill the sea with pain and block traffic in China: “Our first president, George Washington, said that if you want peace you have to prepare for war.”
The fact is that in the time of the Cold War, in the 1960s, after two occasions of bringing the United States and the Soviet Union closer to the gates of the nuclear wars, the great powers organized a consensus strategy that is now down, opening the way to any tactic and calculation. Experts explain throughout the film how a limited conflict can become a total atomic war thanks to the poor understanding and measurement of the intentions of both enemies.
Pilger is very critical of the people of the rich world who are the blind slaves of the United States. Her home country is Australia as one more Yankees state. On Japan it says that it remains fundamentally a colony of the United States, because of appearances. And from Europe, which we are paying for helping to destroy the political structures of the Maghreb and the Middle East with erroneous criteria, on the one hand receiving more attacks at home, but even more so because of the flooding of immigrants and exiles that come to us.
Everything is covered by the propaganda of fear of China. Admiral in charge of Pentagon communication, Harry Harris, military commander of Asia and the Pacific Sea, responded to the New York Times by asking about his field of work: “My responsibility comes from Bollywood to Hollywood, from polar bears to penguins.” Concise and clear.
The film also covers the movements of citizens facing war structures. In particular, two. The Japanese island of Okinawa has 35 military bases. Following the rape of a 12-year-old girl by Yankee soldiers in 1995, the movement against the bases has intensified and today the island's governor, Takeshi Onaga, stands out against the military bases.
On the island of Jeju in South Korea, the Seoul government intends to open a military base dedicated to the United States, dismantling the Gangjeong fishing village. Every day people and many of the foreigners block the threshold of the base with the mass officiated by the old Catholic priest Mun Jeong-hyeon: “I sing four times at the base, without worrying about time. They want to destroy the environment and the very life of citizenship and we have to bear witness.”
