When you read Hu, we will just celebrate International Euskera Day. You would celebrate it one way or another, and I would of course. The announcement two hundred years ago by Alexander von Humboldt has not yet been complied with; and in some respects there is reason to celebrate Euskera Day. But, having said that, we cannot hide the sociology, the streets and the Spanish accommodations we have in the South and the French in the North.

I've been in a Hazparne hostel for over a month. It has been and there are people there in Euskera: Bertsolari Martin Larralde Bordaxuri, the great journalist Jean Hiriart-Urruti, the writers Piarres Xarriton and Janbattitt Dirassar, the playwrights... The town is located east of Lapurdi, the largest of Lapurdi by land and fairly populated, with about six thousand inhabitants. It is estimated that there are about a thousand two hundred bilingual people and the use of Euskera in the street: 2.5%.

I had stood in a downtown inn with an old playwright. When I walked in, there were people, they all spoke in French. The bilingual server greeted me in French; when I spoke in Basque, he also responded to me. When the interlocutor came, who told me it was a strange environment in the inn, we moved to the special interior of the liver, where we talked in Basque.

When we finished chatting, we talked to a man who had left the South thirty-five years ago. When my interlocutor told him that I was from Hernani, he said:

“Yes, two worlds are the one over there and the one over here. It is easy for you to be Basque and Abertzale; here, however, it must be confirmed every day. I recently heard an aitatxi with his grandson speak in Basque for the first time. I didn't know I was Euskaldun. Here it is often seen that two Basques speak French together, although they often denounce accents that are Basque.

The former playwright agreed, but with nuances: “In Hazparne more was done earlier; now the young people look like Aiherran and Lekornen, but here, in Hazparne: We are very lowered!”

So far from there? In Hernani, in the neighborhood where I live, the atmosphere on the street and in the inns is as Spanish as the French atmosphere of Hazparne. In the old town you hear more Basque, but listening to two Basque speakers speaking in Spanish is common, and it is more common for the conversation to enter Basque and end in Spanish. And the same thing in the villages around us.

Also the Basques in general, and we are not thirteen here and there in the dozen, we are dominated, assimilated, to a worrying extent, by sociology and above all by the Spanish media here and by the French media there.

Major deficiencies in political sovereignty and even greater in cultural sovereignty. What sociology, what Spanish streets and inns we have in the South, and what French in the North!
