What are the actors, besides being people who get into the hair of others? For many they are beings living in the Olympus of luxury and fame. Being and not being human. So when a Basque film is shown at the festival, we want to see the Basque actors stepping on the red carpet, elegant, because the situation requires it, and smiling, because crushing it is a necessary happiness. Far away, we imagine them above, and we think they're not the same when we see them in the checkout line at the supermarket, trying to calculate in a sad and dark way the balance that will be left on the credit card.
A few days ago I was in the Amarauna program of the Basque Country Irratia to talk about the lack of work of the actors. Excuse for a survey published by AISGE (Association of Performers, Management Association), an association that defends the rights of the actors. According to this survey, two out of three do not have a job. Numbers. In the Basque Actors Union (EAB) there are more than 400, which means that more than 250 actors have no work. Big numbers.
How beautiful are the numbers to hide stories of flesh and bone with names and surnames! Specific names and surnames. Among others, dozens of ETB actors such as Goenkale have participated. Where will they be now? Maybe the face you're familiar with in the checkout line at the supermarket, and you don't know why, it's one of them. And in addition, in those numbers are the ones that are still considered actors. How long has it remained on the curb?
Not long ago, I don't think I had the courage to write this, I spent two or three very bad years. Without a job and tired of his throat, when he met the people on the street, and against the habit, he answered “very badly” to the question “how are you?” His face was filled with wonder and discomfort. “But you… it is not possible.” Surely you would think you would live in Olympus, if not ETB. “No, you may not have a job,” he continued. And I, “yes, it’s possible, and also, being more than 50 years old, it’s too late to start doing something else.”
“It’s true,” they said, “it’s also harder in your area.” Ending these conversations was as difficult as writing this article.
Well, today I don't have a job and I don't know what to do... I've grabbed the credit card with a jerky hand and I'm going to the supermarket.
