I think the new cycle of great concerts called Bilbao art port is a very positive bet. We have options to enjoy classical music in Bilbao, but we welcome this new initiative. However, I felt a special fear at the first session of this cycle. We have had a good orchestra, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, a legendary director like Zubin Mehta and very few people in the auditorium of the Euskalduna Palace. I couldn't believe it. Bad weather? Expensive inputs? We don't know, but it wasn't normal.
Unintentionally, this situation gave a touch of coldness to the concert, from beginning to end, and I think it was noticed in the fruits that Master Mehta gave.
That's right, they offered a very interesting program. Two great unfinished symphonies: Schubert's and Bruckner's. And the results are totally different. Schubert’s Symphony in itself D 759 Unfinished” is a lyrical and poetic work, a true masterpiece. And yes, we had a sweet reading, but pretty flat and, I would say, boring. We had a simple version, maybe too simple, discouraged. We found the passive Zubin Mehta, who had not sparked sparks from the score. The Orchestra offered good sound and compaction, but from then on we did not take anything special.
Fortunately, in the second part of the concert we are more pleased. 9 Bruckne. The Symphony in re menor A 128 is a very expressive work, which has a thousand nuances, and we are sorry. We will confess that Mehta followed the path of simplicity, but this time he did pull the soul out of the score. The first movement was Feierlich, mysterious and interesting gradation. The second, Scherzo, came to us dry and hard, as it should be, and the best time, no doubt, we had it in the third movement. We heard a wonderful, mystical, beautiful adage.
The second session of this cycle will take place on 23 October. Moscow Virtuosi with the sum of Vladimir Spivakov. The audience responds.
