The Arbel Cooperative (Aramaio baserritarras association formed by the acronym Arbel) is a partnership serving the baserritars of Aramaio (Álava) and surroundings. It has a long journey: Since it was founded by the town’s garrisons in 1982, it has continued to do so. Currently, the association has about 90 members and three workers.
The main activity of the Arbel Cooperative has been to bring cereals and produce natural feed for 35 years. If it was originally created to meet the needs of the village baserritars, the delivery service in the Bizkaia area and in the Alto Deba valley is extended over time.
In autumn 2015 they had to remove the machinery from the feed factory, interrupting production. “This has led us in part to a loss of autonomy, but at the same time it has allowed us to adapt the space of the cooperative in order to make a much broader offer,” explains Irati Mujika of the cooperative.
Now that they bring feed from outside, they continue to carry out the supply and distribution, and this activity is still one of the most important pillars of the cooperative.
The members of the cooperative have chosen to expand the offer of the new space they opened as a store last March. In addition to products intended for baserritars, objects have also been placed that can be of use to people with small orchards and to the general population. “Until now we had to go to Arrasate to buy a pen, now in the village there will be that opportunity,” says Mujika.
Other initiatives are also planned for the future. At the moment, together with the local consumer team, they have organized the first initiative: Course in organic preserves. Aramaioarras have been able to learn how to make preserves of vegetables, preserved in vinegar and fruit jams, stevias and panel together with members of the Ortutik association now.
