The pensioners of Hego Euskal Herria and the Spanish State are concerned about the continuing liquidation of the pension court. The Spanish Ministry of Labour has allocated EUR 8.7 billion from the Reserve Fund to pay pensions in July. After this operation, there are only EUR 25.176 million left over from what was saved in the bonanza period. At this rate, potage will be empty by the end of 2017. In 2011, the figure amounts to EUR 67,000 million. What has happened to get to this situation?

There are five million unemployed people in Spain and in Social Security, with whom pensions are paid, each day they are less. Not only less, because wages have been reduced as a result of precarious and temporary jobs, contributors do so to a lesser extent. The PP Government is pushing a flat rate of contribution to stimulate recruitment, thus making Social Security incomes insufficient.

Faced with this situation and if we want to continue to guarantee pensions, we must eradicate precariousness and commit ourselves to decent and stable employment, we need more affordable wages than we do today. In addition, all of this needs to be better managed. In Hego Euskal Herria, through statutes and agreements we theoretically have competence for Social Security. But Madrid does not fulfil that commitment and does not allow us to intervene. There is another reason to claim national sovereignty, to guarantee our pensions with our own social security. Of course, here too we can do things wrong. But political, trade union and social control would be much bigger and better. It can be a goal of struggle.
