Betting on Spain is that no one leaves Spain. It's over.

During the months that have been trying to form government, one of the central issues has been the right to decide and the referendum in Catalonia. Yesterday's red lines are now again the red and yellow lines, and they raise the civil guard and the armed forces, and tomorrow you'll know.

In the same way as in the previous general elections, you don’t have to be an expert political scientist to see where the desire for change is, so you just have to look at the colors of the state’s electoral maps. In the Basque Country and in Catalonia the logic of voting does not go beyond this statement: National defense or departure from Spain. In other words, believing that the Spanish State can change or maintain its own project. As for the first option, it is evident that a step backwards has been taken in the construction of identity along the path of assimilation. If there is an opportunity to improve Spain, would people agree in a more “authentic” Spain? Independence will have to be careful about the footprint that that speech leaves.

The British voted in favour of leaving, following the forecasts. Even though the polls had predicted Brexit at many times, it was really hard to believe that that could be the result. The result, in my view, has been a missed opportunity. It was a missed opportunity because the Left in Europe is in a situation of complete disorientation. It was a perfect occasion to propose a serious debate on the European Union. The movements on the left have been completely ununited throughout the campaign. On the one hand, those in favour of staying in Europe say that it is possible to restore the project of the social Europe of peoples and that the rights of workers are better protected under the European umbrella. Jeremy Corbyn has been one of those who has taken advantage of this argument, albeit very humble and with a small mouth (always very critical of the EU). However, many others see in the EU only a neo-liberal trade agreement, barriers for refugees, an attitude towards Greece and a blurring of social protection through austerity. In any case, it is known that the Left has not been able to influence the campaign and that the xenophobia raised by UKIP and Boris Johnson has been the main argument for mobilising people.

Scotland, for its part, voted on the basis of another criterion. Now that the British have threatened the Scots and if they became independent they would stay outside the European Union, they have decided to go against the will of Scotland. Little paradoxes. The Brexit chapter is not closed, but it is logical to think that it will open the doors of the new referendum in Scotland. This would once again move the mill of the right to decide on the part of the peoples and new opportunities can be opened up in the European context. Why is it going to find us?
