In 1858 the army of the military governor of Sonora (Mexico) murdered the mother, wife and three sons of the Apache of Jerónimo (1829-1909). Jerónimo swore revenge and, starting from Sonora, launched attacks on the armies of Mexico and the United States. United States, joining the leader of the Cochise Apaches, Chirikahua. Resigning from living in the reserves and fleeing again and again, he fought until 1886.

Apparently, the Apache received the nickname Jerome when he started attacking, but his original name was Goyahkla or Goyaałé, and it means “the one who yawns” in the Txirikahua language.
