Joy
A few days ago I heard an interesting interview with pianist Krystian Zimmermann and, among many other things, said something I had just told him: “What matters when you make music on stage is that you feel the joy; or rather, when you feel the joy among the musicians that is transmitted and that is what really does a good performance (a minimum quality is supposed)”.
I remembered that phrase when I heard the opera La traviata that was represented last Friday in San Sebastian. The Opus Lirica Association is making a great effort in Donostia-San Sebastián to give the opera a boost and create an opera season. It is not an easy thing, especially as good funding is needed. But little by little, interesting initiatives are also being offered. On this occasion, they made a truly “satisfying” version of this famous title of Verdi. They have few means, for example, in view of how poor the decor was, but in spite of that, they did a dignified and courageous show. Above all, the passion among all the artists on stage was evident, while “joy” was contagious. The tenor Matteo Mezzaro, in the role of Alfredo, with a nice but mistechnique voice, the baritone Paolo Gavanelli, who made Giorgio Germont, with a dark and dusty voice, was not enough to fascinate the show. No. The audience was astonished. That's the magic of musical joy.
Yes, Ainhoa Garmendia made a beautiful Violetta Valéry. I have not heard it for a long time, and it has to be acknowledged that it is a handsome soprano, with a very elaborate technique, and from an interpretative point of view it was very convincing. He moved very well over the board and made some impeccable arias: Amami Alfredo or Aria di Violetta, candy for example.
The other singers, right there. OK. Opus Lírica, under the direction of Andrea Albertín, fulfilled its role with dignity. On the other hand, the group of dantzaris, of the Navarra School of Dance, and very special the representation of the Biscayan bull, like the dancing aurresku. Curious. In general, the program was worth it. Go on!
