More than whom, with whom to call
We begin to talk about other consumption models and the primary sector usually comes to mind: consumption groups, local products… But critical consumption measures are not limited to eating and drinking. The first alternatives in the field of technology and telecommunications networks needed by the gigantic infrastructure have also been created. One of them is the Eticom - Som Connection cooperative, which offers telephone and internet services. This is a project that has been launched in the Catalan countries, but is already underway in the Basque Country.
Without total sovereignty, for the time being
It is common to hear or read complaints about the opaque and clumsy service offered by Movistar, Euskaltel, Vodafone, etc. Well, Eticom wants to respond to this situation by offering the same non-profit service and with a project that is both participatory and transparent. In essence, they want to make sense of the question “with whom do you call?”.
Yes, today, Eticom still has to drink from the source of the largest companies, according to Óscar Rando: “The greatest sovereignty we can achieve in mobile telephony is that we are a virtual mobile operator (VMO), that is, an operator without a network. In Spain, the network is managed by Movistar, Vodafone, Orange and Yoigo. Until the regulations are amended, the services we offer must be one of these operators.”
Instead of client, partner
What's the difference? The most important thing is that whoever uses the service is the partner and not the client who merely pays and consumes. In order to be a partner, it is necessary to make a contribution of EUR 100, and in return, to participate in the decisions of the cooperative: what price is set, what the benefits are for… In addition, each partner can invite 5 people to use the service.
The second difference has to do with the conditions of service. On the one hand, they refuse to use confusing rates and promotions: Instead of putting the price of EUR 9.99, the entry price is EUR 10. On the other hand, all prices include VAT from the very beginning: they try to complete the most intelligible contracts without a small letter, and if there is someone who uses less than what the contracted service offers, they propose a cheaper rate. The aim of these measures is to put an end to the usual perils and dislikes of other suppliers.
Eticom, which currently only offers a service for mobile phones, works “to the fullest” to provide Internet connection. This is the challenge, contrary to the sectoral trend, of bringing increasingly areas of consumption that prioritizes collective needs in the face of economic benefits. It's not a frivolous goal.
