At the beginning of the course, two groups of 15 people and a conversation group were formed. In addition to the students, this year two university workers and a group of parents studying at the university have registered. They teach twice a week, in one-hour sessions each.
Students who have become teachers move away from the academic point of view and try to create a pleasant environment. It is intended that the Basque language be enjoyed by the students and that the mutual relations be solid. The most common thing is that students have very little relationship with the Basque Country and the Basque culture. The members of the Euskera Group believe that the use of a fun way of teaching and the fact that the school is free generates a good attitude in the students.
The Euskera Group emerged within the Association of Patriotic Students of the UPNA, but one year later it emerged from Ikasle Abertzaleak and positioned itself as an independent group at the campus level. The Basque Group has since been formed by students who want to live and study in Basque, aware of the lack of presence of the Basque Country in the Public University of Navarra.
In the UPNA there is little chance of studying in Basque, only the degrees corresponding to the Magisterium can be studied in Basque. In the rest of the studies, most of the subjects are in Spanish. It's also hard to talk in Basque outside the classroom. For years, UPNA student groups have denounced that it is difficult to find someone who knows Euskera among government workers and in the cafeteria, for example.
They celebrated Euskera Day from the beginning, to denounce the scarce presence of the Basque in the university, and on the other hand, to give the necessary space to the Basque.
The past year, taking advantage of the fact that Korrika has gone through Iruñea, they met with the members of LAB and the Basque group of UNED and reflected on it. In addition, together with Ikasle Abertzaleak and Eraldatu organized the Herri Unibertsitatea in the UPNA.
During the 2014-2015 presidential elections, students, professors and university staff joined to work for the Basque Country and created a platform for the Basque Country. The new rectoral team was asked for the minimums in Euskera, divided into three lines.
In the first place, it would be related to teaching issues; to increase the number of credits offered in Basque and the Basque level of teachers. Secondly, to take into account the level of Euskera when hiring services for the university, as well as to offer training in Euskera to those who were already hired. Thirdly, they called for an increase in cultural activities in Euskera and based on Euskera.
Despite being a group formed in the framework of the elections to the Rectorado, today it continues to gather, including the Euskera Group.
The Public University of Navarra was founded in 1987. According to data from the 2013-2014 academic year, it has about 7,780 students and a total of 859 people as teachers and researchers. It offers 18 degrees, two double degrees and 20 university master's degrees. Of this offer, only the Master's Degrees in Early Childhood and Primary Education are in their entirety in Basque. In the rest of the grades and in the Master's Degree in Training of Secondary Education Faculty, the students can choose a few subjects in Basque.
According to the Vice-Rectorate of Educational Management of the Public University of Navarra in the 2007-2015 report of the language planning board, the number of students who know Euskera has increased considerably. In 2004-2005, 18.79% of the population had Basque knowledge and 27.45% in 2014-2015. With regard to faculty and researchers, and taking into account the 2014-2015 course, C1 or EGA in Euskera is 14.57% and 10% have knowledge of Euskera. Therefore, one third of professors have no knowledge of Euskera.
Professors Pablo Sotes, Nekane Oroz and Carlos Vilches presented in 2013 a study on the attitudes and beliefs of UPNA students in relation to bilingual education and bilingual education. In the 2005-2006 academic year, 2,048 students and discussion groups were interviewed. Among other things, they wanted to know their linguistic ability.
According to the survey, 14% of the students had Basque as their mother tongue or Basque as their mother tongue and only 84% of the students had Spanish as their mother tongue. However, 40% of the students surveyed were able to speak in Basque. 20% had a basic or higher degree in Basque.
According to more than 60% of the students, the Basque language was not standardized. A 76.5% believed that it is appropriate to expand the subjects in Euskera, as the offer is insufficient.
