Response of Euskaltegis of social initiative to the institutional declaration
The Basque Government and seven other institutions wanted the Euskaldunberris to be the centrepiece of celebrations on 3 December, International Euskera Day, among other things because they are pioneers in effective linguistic freedom.
According to the institutional declaration, “Euskaldunberris have pioneered the path of effective linguistic freedom and sustainable linguistic democracy. Each of the speakers who has won the Basque Country opens up opportunities to express themselves in Basque to the other speakers of their environment. One of the main bases of our coexistence is to guarantee and respect linguistic rights, not to force anyone to change language.”
The Euskaltegis of social initiative have responded to the declaration by saying that, like the Euskaldunberris, teachers will one day also need a tribute and something else: “It is not enough to name the ‘Euskera professor of Euskaltegis’ in the town square. The means must be provided so that, for once, the work can be carried out with dignity; yes, that will be the appropriate praise. We are no longer content to hear that we are strategic. We can’t go on like that.”
Medical students, angry
On the other hand, students of the School of Medicine and Dentistry of the UPV/EHU of Leioa have also strongly criticized the attitude of decanate towards the Basque Country, on the occasion of the Basque Day: “It cannot be understood that the only initiative that has been carried out in four decades in favor of the Basque Country is the lipdub and the storytelling competition. Therefore, to those of us who work 365 days a year to make health careers possible in Basque, the attitude of the deanship seems to us to be a mockery. In fact, the initiative is on the right track, but it will be a pointless job if it does not have continuity. Therefore, under no circumstances will we allow deanship to be used to justify itself and to show a false image in favor of the Basque Country”.
