It is clear that the economic crisis has hit young people the most. It is a crisis that is destroying an entire generation and that will generate an ageing society with more addictions, inequalities and social exclusion. It will bring thousands of people to poverty. Unemployment affects 50% of young people – thousands of Basques and Basques. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, in the Spanish State 15% of Spanish youths aged between 15 and 29 do not study or work. On the contrary, 71% of young people who work do so under temporary contracts, working for hours. And a quarter of them don't want it. Vocational training, although it can achieve higher employment rates, has been completely abandoned. Salaries are very low, few exceed EUR 700. Where are the mileurists?

Access to housing, both for rent and for purchase, is not possible for a young person. In the CAV, the average rent of a house is 732 euros and in Navarra, 490 euros. So far this year, the rent of housing in the CAV has increased by 6%. And buying a home is even more difficult, as in Hego Euskal Herria the average price is 2,015 euros per square meter, while in Iparralde it is 3,000 euros. Thus, it is difficult for young people to leave their parents' homes and have a life plan for the future. The average age of emancipation of our young people is 30 years, four years higher than that of Europeans.

The solution they offer us from employers and governments is to go abroad to work. This formula should not be the norm. The Basque Country, like the other peoples, needs to renew its structures, including in the educational, productive and labour fields. We need to uproot young people here, respecting those who want to go abroad to work and live. We cannot offer this alternative of emigration in general. Companies, governments and institutions have a responsibility to pursue smart policies so that young people do not need to emigrate.
