From titles to music, hypnotic and macabre display of the last second of the last episode. The tension and the rhythm, as if we were in an amusement park, while experiencing the incredible turns that any Hollywood script would want. A magnificent documentary of series plagued with them. As we see in other documentaries like Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills, Dear Zachary: a letter to a son about his father and The Imposter; by the way, if you haven’t seen them, don’t miss these three terrible jewels – a clear proof that reality outweighs fiction.
In 2010, when director Andrew Jarecki premiered All Good Things, few expected that this film based on the life of Robert Durst would have its influence when rolling this documentary we are talking about. It was at that time that the real protagonist contacted the director, telling him that he was willing to hold a conversation he had never done so far.
And who exactly was that guy? Robert Durst is an eccentric and mysterious character from a famous and wealthy New York family. In addition to killing and sparking a man, he was accused of being directly responsible for the disappearance of his wife and a friend. Produced by the television channel HBO and divided into six parts, we delved into the exact review of his life. While the tests and interviews of police, judges, lawyers, witnesses and relatives are interspersed, we will see how these controversial and controversial moments are reconstructed.
This is precisely one of the keys that gives the documentary a unique whole, dotted with a complete cinematographic aesthetic. Unlike those mediocre reconstructions of crimes that we're used to seeing on television, there's incredible, careful creative work that gives extraordinary credibility to work. As if the viewer was staring from a small hole and feeling all that happened live. But, on the other hand, it shows the manipulative aspect that many have criticized, that is, that taking into account all the material that the authors of this documentary have achieved, they have only opted for production. In order to create a spectacular audiovisual product, all the tests and testimonies obtained along the way have been used in small doses so that the series does not lose the point of visibility or morbo. It is clear that it is not legitimate to get the show on behalf of anything else, but I do not entirely agree with those criticisms, which in this case have only made an administration of the truth. They have decided when to explain it and when not, because, let us not forget the friends, this is television, and besides being didactic and pedagogical, it is important that it be entertaining. The exact reason for all this will be understood in the last few seconds of the last chapter, and especially with the vorágine that occurred the day after the publication of this work.
Amazing documentary series that describes with surgical coldness the character, the trajectory and, above all, the dark and incredible case that constantly surrounds Robert Durst. Questioning the spectator over and over again and conducting an exceptional psychological investigation; trying to show what is in the brain of this despicable and dazzling character; through the ambiguity of his black and penetrating eyes, so peculiar, that raises two questions: A cruel and cold killer, or simply for being in moments and places that should not have been due to bad luck, the story of a surviving extravagro? Victim or executioner? To know how it ends, you know what to do. It does prepare an anti-eye cream, because until you're done, you won't be able to escape the claws of this amazing, terrible story. And very important, before seeing the documentary, to try to read as little information as possible about it, as the data and images disseminated in different media disappear the “surprises” that we can live constantly. Indispensable.
