Josu Martínez has mixed imagination and reality in his book Tunelak, Izarak, mozorroak eta bafleak (Elkar, 2014), published in the same magazine. In the last 50 years he has published a collection of ten attempts to escape political prisoners, some of them successful and others unsuccessful. In any case, success matters little here, because, as the writer himself has acknowledged, he has focused primarily on the search for diversity. To the extent that the duty of every prisoner is to be free, the different forms of imagination with which he has been approached have been united for the reader’s interest; frustrated and defeated leaks, ridiculous, exciting, surprising, etc. Some will be well known, such as the mythical escape of Sarrionandia and Pikabea within the Bafles, or the escape of Segovia, and others, by keeping them secret, are less famous.
Journalistic tone and form predominate. In other words, Josu Martínez engages the reader in the discussions held with the direct witnesses. As a result, the impact, the surprise and the intrigue is even greater when we know that all the characters in these getaways are of flesh and bone that we could describe as artistic adventures. Otherwise, “of the ignorance of those who have only known this kind of thing in movies” (in edition 68), we might think that everything is invented. This is the case, for example, with the escape of Kabra, who jumps out the hospital window with a car of friends under waiting, but spontaneously takes another path. “That is a flight from the Kabra, not only to the police, but also to the peers!” (page 60). Also striking are the change of the Berasategi brothers and the operation of the Iparralde in Pau prison. The two escapes to leave after entering jail.
Josu Martínez has chosen ten getaways to offer us in a book. In other words, by your personal imagination you have combined these and so on, I believe you have achieved an appropriate result. Agile reading, with sources of information, data and elements of interest and crowned by Sarrionandia's idea of leaks. In the end, we will find a timeline of the leaks of the past 50 years and a compilation of the sources of information from the newspaper library that have helped in the book process.
A highly recommended reading.
