GAL and conscientious objection
The last reform of university studies began in 1999 with the signing of the Bologna Declaration. It started to create the model of studies that we would have in the future. The protests of those students were massive, even though they would not know the new curriculum. On the contrary, the students we currently have at the university were then in daycare and did not have the opportunity to discuss the commodification of education. The current student body has a short past. They do not remember the Bologna Declaration and do not understand the concern that the acronym GAL causes in others.
During the creation of the new Curricula it was attempted that the End Degree Work was the End Degree Work, for not remembering the black times. But in the end, in most places, it's been renamed GAL, the work that puts an end to the university's basic studies. For many students, the GAL is just a job that needs to be delivered at the end of the course.
This year I have been tutoring four of these students. The teaching staff offers the areas and the system assigns students based on academic results. In my case, the area refers to the production and realization of a documentary. In other words, students have to make a documentary.
I've started mentoring meetings with all four students. And as always, I have announced that I will accompany you in the learning process, that I will help you make the documentary, but that you have total freedom to choose the theme. They've begun to comment on the issues that concern them: oral culture, fishermen's lives, silence, some music group, a new activity called agility ...
The fourth disciple suddenly launched his: “Guardia Civil”. A saliva silencio.Tragu. Here's the question I ask you every year: "And the point of view?" The student has specified that he wants to make a documentary about the vocation of the civil guards through his web. Then another student asks him: “What for? To clean up your image?” The last question did not like the one who proposed the subject.
When they left the office, I stopped to think about the package that I had been left with. What a difficult task, what a challenge! I have discussed it with my colleagues. One has told me that I should not protect that work, “at least until the Civil Guard asks me for forgiveness.”
What are the reasons for conscientious objection in university education? What limits?
