Josu Jon Imaz says: “Petronor, the oil industry, is at the forefront and reflects the spirit of tradition and the closeness of its surroundings. He owes his productive strength to him. For this reason, its objective is to improve competitiveness in the international market and to transfer its results to the environment.” He's the president of the company. I think it is time to change or adapt those words.
Vanguard? The company, born in 1968, next to the Cantabrian Sea, is no longer at the forefront. They will continue to say that it is Spain’s first oil refining company, but that the 2013 debt cannot be covered. It is far from earning EUR 295 million in 2007. In 2012, it won only EUR 18.1 million, and last year, for the first time, it went into red numbers. Although it refined 8.7 million tonnes of oil (1.2 million tonnes more than in 2012), it ended in negative terms, with losses of EUR 87.5 million. Why? Fundamentally, because oil is extracted thousands of kilometers away, and the refining's businesses are located there, next to the wells. Petronor buys an oil that is getting heavier, worse and as cheap as possible to refine it in its new coke plant, but the figures are not good and it does not seem to change in the future.
The environment? Five years ago, Amatiño, head of the Petronor press, wanted to interview us on the topic of the coke plant and after no, he responded: “Conflict, where? There is no conflict here.” The problem of the coke plant has been long and Petronor considered this installation as a salvation to operate in the market. They responded to the criticisms by pretending they didn't see them. But if you look at the propaganda about the environment that they do, they say they're very concerned about corporate image. That’s why Petronor gives Athletic in Bilbao two million euros for wearing his logo on the t-shirt, but how long?
Energy transition? To the extent that we consume oil, gas, coal or uranium, it will not be for long. The sun is the only sustainable source of energy, so for the change of energy model, the transition from fossil fuels to renewables is fundamental. In Euskal Herria, we have social, economic and technological resources for this transition, we are much better than in other countries. The question is whether Petronor and Iberdrola and other transnational energy agents are part of the solution or the problem?

Many at Christmas feel more lazy than illusion when we think about meals and family gatherings. But we anticipate that it is not food that makes us feel collectively uncomfortable, but the normativity that defines the traditional family. Moreover, we would dare to say that the... [+]
