In June 1889, the queen of Italy, Margarita de Saboya, made a one-month visit to Naples. The queen knew the fame of the pizzas of the city and, therefore, wanted to taste the works of Raffaele Esposito, the most famous of the pizzoles. The cook was taken to the Capodimonte Palace to prepare the best possible pizzas for the queen. EsposiĆ³ baked three pizzas: one with oil, another with anchovies and the third with tomato, mozzarella and two or three with basil leaves. Margarita's sentence was positive: all three were eaten at ease, but the favorite was the third. And that's why the creator named his work Pizza Margherita.
