Social security in imperial China
In ancient China, doctors didn't charge the sick when they were visiting their homes. So what did the doctors of the Chinese Empire live from? It would be said that they paid the doctors with a kind of pension. Sick people didn't pay, healed people did, so doctors got their pay every month. This salary depended on the results; the more ill the doctor was healed, the more reward the doctor received.
Moreover, if the doctor asked the patient for the money before the end of the healing process, the patient could report it and the error was paid with death. With this extreme measure, the authorities ensured that medical professionals would be well trained and would do everything possible to collect at the end of the month.
