There are several types of contraception, from the daily pill to the sterile one that needs to be changed every five years. Recently, the U.S. company MicroCHIPS announced at MIT Technology Review a new method, a chip valid for 16 years.
A 20-millimeter long chip, with enough hormones and batteries to stop pregnancy for sixteen years, is placed under the skin. Thanks to the weak current of the battery, 30 micrograms of hormones are released daily in the body. The user can disable the device whenever they want and reactivate it afterwards.
Next year they will start testing people, and they are expected to be on the market by 2018.
