Joseph Guillotin (1738-1814) was against the death penalty and, after the revolution, attempted in vain to suspend the sentence in the French National Congress. Then, at least he tried to pave the way for the punishment, and proposed to use the machine that would cause the least possible pain: “The mechanism is fast as a lightning bolt, the head goes in the air, the blood comes out in a torrent and the human is no longer,” he explained to the congresistas.Aceptando the proposal, the method was expanded immediately. The device was called Guillotin, although it was not an inventor and it was against the death penalty.
