The Basque primary sector, like that of the whole world, is at a crossroads, and if the appropriate decisions are not taken, it could be about to disappear. Neoliberalism, that is, traditional capitalism and the globalization of the economy have turned the world into merchandise. The rural world disappears because industrial agriculture has been overwhelmed. This is the case of GM crops, as well as agro-fuels that take millions of hectares of land to produce food. It is a model that only benefits banks, multinationals and the agricultural industry and that causes great environmental damage.
In this context, the Nirea project was born, with the help of the Gasteiz Government, the Hazi public foundation and the social and trade union partners. It is a project to recover the future basic connection between the countryside and the city, so that the citizens undertake to take into account the local products of the primary sector in their consumption habits. The EHNE-Bizkaia has called for the agreement to be complied with in terms of content and for this a new model of agricultural development is needed, for the benefit of those who maintain the sector. It is precisely on April 17 that the International Day of the Peasant Struggle for the “heritage of all and the resistance to the defense of our territories” is celebrated. The organizers of this day, including Mundubat, have asked to mobilize against capitalism to rescue and strengthen local markets: “We must build bridges between rural and urban areas, between people who live in towns and those who want to cultivate land; we must promote processes of return to agriculture.”
The Ea Nirea project goes beyond the propaganda of the Basque Government and is committed to another agricultural development, although the current production model must be changed. To this end, measures must be taken and financial allocations must be made.
