The writer has defined his last book as a fiction based on news about the events of a particular era: Bodyguard preferences. Considering the armed conflict that has shaken Basque society for 50 years, ETA has included it in the months prior to the declaration of truce in October 2011, in a plot that looks like a black novel.
After the first breakthroughs in the peace process, there has been a rumour that the police had infiltrated the armed gang. The possible assassination of a mole jeopardizes every road to peace and, therefore, Martin Goena, who was an armed militant in the past, will be hired as a bodyguard. Things are becoming more complicated when Aratz, Bildu's councilor and Martin's daughter, is accused of participating in the murders of the Ertzaintza.
Years before making the official decision to abandon weapons, the group did not experience times of splendor and, perhaps for that reason, referred to both internal separation and lack of coordination. Many interrogations were opened. How can we explain the frustrated attempts at various attacks? The disappearance of colleagues and collaborators? Or the voluntary deliveries of some people within the group for extreme situations? In the face of singular and strange events, the possibility of one or more police infiltrations was considered. Who hasn't happened to?
Iñaki Irasizabal has built his fiction on this possible premise. Although it does not want to be a reflection of reality, it seems that taking a political conflict as a springboard proposes to immerse ourselves in the content of some concepts. Peace, justice, betrayal are the constant of this book, the key words that we find in the mouths of all the characters, and also the backbone of the plot. Everyone is going to aim for peace, the characters are going to ask for justice, but after all, we are all traitors in the eyes of others. Why?
Unknowingly, these words are only words of a very rudimentary sense, which are quoted every day eleven thousand times, and when they are put into practice, they are made and disposed at will with the money through. The definition of universal value has been relegated to the need for market system trade: What is the price of peace? Justice for whom and why?
As we throw each other under ideological principles, those who have put price on our lives look at the show smiling.
