I wonder why women who have chosen not to have children constantly question themselves. In addition to having to endure many famous phrases, they often consider us “semi-women”. As if motherhood was a magic formula that makes us real women.
To me, like every sensible woman, it seems to me that motherhood needs an absolutely free choice. But that's often not the case.
We are accused of selfishness and they make us shut up, agitated, saying things like “you are not a mother and therefore you cannot give an opinion” when we want to participate in the debate.
I am also not a politician and I speak of politics; I am not a believer, but I speak of religion and they do not leave me alone for that.
This androcentric voiceover is, in my view, nothing more than a ploy. It is also a step reinforced by speeches such as “motherhood and natural growth”, a dangerous practice that can generate “mysticism of motherhood”.
I have been tired of hearing many expressions in the environment and especially in the media: “Being a mother has been the best thing that has happened to me in life or the experience of motherhood is the best thing that can happen to the woman.”
I respect it, but every woman should talk about her own experience, without pretending to objectivize the subjective, without turning it into a universal value. Thus, patriarchal values are broadened.
This system needs us to reproduce, and to do so, at the same time that we work on the discourse about the traditional family, conceals and disregards the other ways of understanding the family, sexuality and autonomy. Therefore, to be “good” and not “weird”, you have to bring children into the world, but if a lesbian couple wants to have them, they will be given all the obstacles and five.
As if it were not enough, it is a widespread conviction that when a woman has decided not to have children, she has also decided not to have a partner or not to practice sex. They make us socially sterile, because we talk about the eternal in the background: reproducing the traditional family.
