All governments, particularly those in southern Europe, including those in Hego Euskal Herria, are concerned about their budgets and about making anti-social cuts with the economic crisis that is dismantling welfare. There is a formula that would help to square numbers: a profound tax reform. Governments, the managers of capitalism, do not dare to play great riches. They do not dare to abolish tax havens. But “closing tax havens is very easy, it takes will, Europe has to say ‘it is over’ and bring the money back. It’s easy: we must stop accepting the legal actions that have been signed in those countries.” This was expressed by the French economist René Passet, one of the few who warned of the current economic crisis, the first chairman of the scientific committee of ATTAC and emeritus professor at the University of Paris.

Last week he appeared in Madrid as a witness at the trial for the extradition of Herve Falciani, a former HSBC worker in Geneva, Madrid. Falciani "stole" the secret accounts of more than 130,000 tax fugitives, of which 4,000 are Spanish and there are a large number of Basque citizens. The former Swiss worker is not guilty of tax evasion in Europe and yet he has been sitting on the bench of the court. Throat criminals, however, are free. Until bank and tax secrets are erased and tax havens are dissolved, the people working in the haciendas and in the banks should respect the position of the former Swiss worker and filter and publish all the secret data hidden by tax criminals. It would be illegal, but it would also be an act of dignified solidarity with those that capitalism has socially marginalised and with the unemployed.
