Why do donuts have holes?
The origin of the word Doughnut is clear: dough means dough and nut, nut. It's not so clear when the man started making bread rolls, but it's thought they were already made in the Middle Ages. They were cited in 1803 in a recipe book from England, but those donuts had no holes in the center. Yes, it was very difficult to cook the whole dough in the same way and often the dough in the middle of the cake was raw.
In an interview in 1916, U.S. Navy Captain Hanson Gregory declared that it was he who invented the hole in the donut in 1847. When Gregory was still 16 years old, he was working on a merchant ship, and fed up with the raw center of nuts cake, he came up with a hole in the middle. He took the pepper that was within his reach, stepped the middle of the cake and thus gave rise to its popular form. Then he told his mother “the secret.” This form quickly spread and became imposed.
