Analysing pollution in schools in France
Between 2009 and 2011, three parameters were analyzed in 310 schools and day care centers in the French state. On the one hand, the concentration of formaldehyde, on the other hand, benzene and, finally, carbon dioxide. The first is the carcinogen found in furniture and in paints and waxes on walls and floors; the second, the carcinogen, which is derived from the combustion gases of cars, is an indicator of indoor air quality, although not toxic.
The results of the study reveal that in very few schools there were carcinogenic substances, but in most cases the amount of carbon dioxide was higher than necessary.
According to this analysis, another one has been proposed that will last until 2016. In 600 classrooms in 300 centres, in addition to the three compounds mentioned, many other pollutants and their origin will be analysed. Depending on the results obtained, new rules for the organization of classrooms will be established.
