What happens in the case of stem cells, if they die with the death of the person, or if they can be kept for a few days and used in transplants, for example?
Several French researchers have just shown that adult stem cells survive a few days after death. This opens up new avenues of research.
According to CNRS researchers, human muscle stem cells can survive seventeen days after death; mouse spinal cord stem cells, four days. After death, the stem cells become dormant, so they do not need much energy to survive, and when they move back to an energy environment they start to multiply rapidly. This behavior may have important therapeutic uses.
