Blood consists of several elements. Red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets on one side and plasma on the other. 90% of the latter is water and the remaining 10% is composed of proteins, salts, hormones and lipoprotein substances.
One of these proteins, albumin, in addition to transporting different components of the blood, keeps the pressure in the veins. It is widely used in medicine, for large burns, liver diseases, hemorrhages and even for the production of several vaccines. Albumin used for all these uses is extracted from human blood, so its management presents many difficulties.
The journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences today publishes that a Chinese group has suggested that human albumin can be created from transgenic rice. From one kilogram of rice 2.75 grams of albumin can be extracted, and tests have shown that it is equivalent to that albumin and to that of man.
