ETA has definitively put an end to its armed activity. What is your assessment?
It is the end of the armed cycle, and this should necessarily involve the opening of a political dialogue. The political conflict therefore remains in a dynamic of solution that guarantees the recognition and the right to decide of Euskal Herria. This will bring the conflict to a definitive end.
An analyst has written "late, but on time."
This decision has come to us after in-depth reflection. The Abertzale left is committed to democratic and peaceful ways two years ago. ETA’s decision supports and boosts the content of the Gernika Agreement and those contained in the document of the Aiete Conference. The occasion is therefore very convenient and we find it very satisfactory news.
ETA has called for dialogue between the Spanish and French governments to seek a solution to the consequences of the conflict. How do you see this option? In what time?
The governments of Spain and France should already address the dialogue with ETA to try to move forward on the road to the consequences of the conflict. The agenda is very clear: the return of prisoners, demilitarisation and disarmament.
What attitude have you seen from the Spanish State? It includes Zapatero and Rajoy.
In all the reactions that have been heard, the weakest has been that of Zapatero. Zapatero should initiate the process of resolving the consequences of the conflict, if he wants to move on to history as the president who has begun the solution. It has to start with this work to leave the succession of the solution initiated to the future Spanish President.
What should the first steps of the new process bring? To solve the situation of prisoners? Cultivating attitude towards the victims? Social reconciliation?
For reconciliation to take place, a long road must be worked out and urgent action must be taken on the return of prisoners and the recognition of victims. The path that will bring home to all prisoners, refugees and clandestine persons must be agreed if the consequences of the armed conflict are to be definitively closed. Similarly, the recognition measures that the victims of violence perpetrated by all parties over the past 30 years deserve should be agreed. As long as it is very clear that there are no first and second victims.
How does Basque society view the new time and the new process?
ETA's decision has aroused new illusions in society and especially in the social base of the Abertzale left, as the opportunities that open up are very important. I see the Left Abertzale framed in the positions advocated by the majority of society and that is very rewarding.
