The free market economy has not come about in a democratic and free environment, as citizens demand and drive, but has taken advantage of times of shock, crisis, emergency, disaster, war... and imposed on several occasions. Just invent an enemy, use the ghost or bewilderment of people, za! establish a strong liberal economic model. That is the focus of the documentary The Shock Doctrine, which has just arrived in our cinemas and is based on the book of economist Naomi Klein.

The starting point is the economic shock therapy of the American Milton Friedman, who received the 1976 Nobel Prize in Economics, rooted in the full freedom of the market. The film analyzes how this economic model was implemented in Pinochet, Argentina during the dictatorship, England after the Malvinas war… until it reached an economy based on fear, starting on September 11. Iraq has been the most privatised war of all time, a sign of what is happening all over the world: everything is privatizable, and the consequences are harsh: unemployment, poverty, the collapse of basic services…

The documentary book can be attributed to simplification because behind the decisions and steps of history there are many factors, but it is an interesting document to reaffirm the trajectory of the savage capitalism that has prevailed over the past 30 years, the botched and the political intrigue. In addition, it is to be welcomed the serious and discreet touch of the great British director Michael Winterbottom, far from Michael Moore's theatrical style.

At the end of the film, an appeal to hope and to go out into the street: we are becoming insensitive to shock. Will this last crisis, rather than a new shock, be the way out of this model?
