The citizens of Busturialdea are mobilising, thanks to the socio-political platform that brings together dozens of political parties, trade unions and social associations, for solutions that allow them to work and live in this beautiful region of Urdaibai, located in Bizkaia. The decision to build the franchise of the Gughenheim Museum in Sukarrieta, defended by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and the PNV, is closer, it can cost 200 million euros and the mobilizations have multiplied in front of it. Last week another step was taken at the General Assemblies of Bizkaia, although the Basque Government does not support this initiative and proposes other projects. Neither the Provincial Council of Bizkaia nor the PNV nor the Basque Government have consulted their projects with the citizens of the area. These impositions are denounced by the mobilizations, demanding respect for the decision of the citizens. The last rally took place last week in Guernica before the General Assemblies of Bizkaia.
The popular platform of work and life in Busturialdea recalls that there is already a strategic plan agreed between different actors and approved by decree in 1998. Its aim is to encourage all socio-economic activities in line with sustainable development. The EUR 200 million planned for the new Urdaibai museum has been requested to be dedicated to productive and social investments. Busturialdea has lost 10,000 jobs in recent years, it needs jobs in all sectors and not the transformation of Urdaibai into a region for mass tourism. They want to work and live in their region. The Provincial Council and the Basque Government can at least be required, before making a final decision, to consult the citizens and respect their word. Stop with the impositions!
