Scientific studies have increased in recent years, increasing the gender gap. In engineering, for example, the percentage of women enrolled is less than a third (29% in degrees and 31% in masters), according to the University of the Basque Country. "The data is especially significant in those sectors traditionally more linked to the male gender (Automotive and Navigation), where the female presence is 7%".

The number of enrolments between men and women is significant in computer degrees. In the 1980s, most of those working in informatics in Spain were women. However, in the 1990s computer science studies were called engineering, and since then the percentage of women has decreased. Currently, there are 16% female students in Spanish universities, 19% in the UPV/EHU.

However, in engineering related to the environment and sustainable development, the percentage of women is higher, for example, in Engineering Masters of Renewable Materials (60%), in Engineering and Environmental Management (75%) and in Rehabilitation, Restoration and Management of Heritage and Built Buildings (71%).

International Day of Women and Girls

On the occasion of February 11, International Day of Girls and Women Scientists, the UPV/EHU has organized various activities, such as the opening on Thursday of the exhibition "Basque Women in Science and Technology" in Metro Bilbao. However, the UPV/EHU notes that this issue will not be exclusive to 11 February and has scheduled activities for the whole year.
