The Church takes back the eviction procedure of the Gaztetxe de Zestoa
  • The Zestoa Youth Assembly reports that the bishopric of Gipuzkoa has restarted a judicial eviction procedure for the Gaztetxe, ignoring the calls to negotiate. In February this year the Elizondo building was destroyed by members of the Gazte Asanblada.

Last Saturday, in Plaza de Zestoa (Gipuzkoa), a meeting of the local Youth Assembly took place to explain the current situation of the new Gaztetxe. The young people reported that the uncertainty about the future of Gaztetxe is total: they have just learned that the Labor Control Space is still in danger of containment, since the bishopric of Gipuzkoa has resumed the evacuation procedure. "After ignoring all the calls for incommunication and negotiation made for months, the Church has launched a judicial eviction process of the Gaztetxe of the center," Gazte Asanblada said at a press conference.

Last February the members of the Gazte Asanblada received the Elizondo building and turned it into Gaztetxe. The space, owned by the Church, was denounced by the bishopric of Gipuzkoa as soon as he became aware of the reappropriation, so a young man from Zestoa was tried in April in Azpeitia (Gipuzkoa). In addition, the Gazte Asanblada denounced at the end of May that the Church threatened him again: before the end of May she told the young people to evict the Gaztetxe saying that if they did not do so, the judicial route would follow. And in the end it has followed that path.

The Church in defense of its private property

"With this action, the Church again shows its reactionary character. Although it stands alongside peace and the oppressed, this retrograde capitalist institution, in practice, defends its private property above any other value. The Gazte Asanblada pointed out on Saturday the intention to evict on behalf of the sacred private property the Gaztetxe that is giving real social function to a building that was falling down."

"He will be willing to collaborate with the violence of the State, with its police and judges, to take the young people out of the town to shock the building," he added. "For what, and for the building to be empty again, one day waiting for a speculative operation."

Responsibility of the City of Zestoa

On the other hand, Gazte Asanblada again stressed the responsibility of the Zestoa City Council (EH Bildu). Years ago he recalled in the appearance that the proposal to move the Gaztetxe "came out of the mouth" of the city council, but that "time has proved" that "it is not interested in endowing the Gazte Asanblada with such an infrastructure for political organization". The young people consider that the City Hall "has put ahead the social order of the people and their partisan interests", that is, "to keep the conservative sectors of the locality calm and, in general, those who can oppose the transformative processes and, on the contrary, to stop anyone who can leave the left".

"EH Bildu is well aware that the process of moving [Gaztetxe] would strengthen the political and independent organization of young people," the Young Assembly added: "All this to compete with the electoral hegemony of the PNV in the people, in the CAV and in the State, thus presenting itself as the highest representative of the social order".

Power of gaztetxe

"Outside the state and institutional policy, the members of the Asanblada Gazte reaffirmed the commitment to provide conditions for political, social and cultural organization in the people." "Although the unstable situation of gaztetxe imposes a number of limitations and obstacles, we have already demonstrated the potential of this building, with actions of different nature that we have carried out in it," they proposed.

They also "looked to the future": "With the activities we are organizing for the summer and the threat of eviction, we will continue to organize the defense of the Gaztetxe. That is why we appeal to participate in the activities that we are going to organize in the Gaztetxe and its defense."
