The new Zestoa Gaztetxe is supported by a mobilization
  • Last Saturday, as part of a solidarity programme, a demonstration was held in Zestoa to support the new restored Gaztetxe. The Gaztetxe continues to threaten Huste, but the members of the Gazte Asanblada claim that "they will not give Zestoa to give her the Gaztetxe she deserves." They insist that the project be transferred to the town centre.

The new Gaztetxe de Zestoa (Gipuzkoa), as the Gazte Asanblada explained last week, is still in danger of Huste. The legitimate owner, the Church, has filed a complaint against the reappropriation of the premises of the center, so the expulsion of members of the assembly and the eviction of the Gaztetxe can be immediate. The new project has been supported by several Personnel Control Spaces and Agents in the Zestoa area, which organized a solidarity programme last Saturday.

On Saturday morning many young people from Zestoa and the surrounding villages met at the Gaztetxe to work in the conditioning of space and eat together. At dusk they mobilized from the Plaza de Zestoa, to the Gaztetxea center, under the motto "Solution now". Over 200 people mobilized to support the new Gaztetxe.

No long-term guarantee

At the end of the demonstration, the members of the Zestoa Youth Assembly once again emphasized the need to move the Gaztetxe, warning of the limitations of the place where the project has so far been located (upper floor of the House of Culture). Lack of accessibility, space and soundproofing were highlighted. They also recalled that in Zestoa there is no "long-term guaranteed Gaztetxerik", as "in the future projects of the people's political parties for the House of Culture" is not "located in any way".

Therefore, the young people explained that in recent years they have worked a lot from the Assembly to achieve an adequate space and the relocation of the Gaztetxe. "Meanwhile, the Church and the municipal government have only hindered us," they denounced. As an example, they pointed out that "in order to carry out the negotiation it was necessary to spend years to form a tripartite table and that since the moment we presented the project [for local change], [churches and municipalities] there was little interest". "As a result of this passive attitude, we are forced to take some step towards conducting the negotiations and finding a final solution, namely the regeneration of the centre," the assembly said.

Work and news in recent weeks

"When we enter the downtown location we find the building in very poor condition, so from the very beginning we started working on its conditioning," the assembly members reported on Saturday. "However, we first saw that we had to guarantee space and contacted the Church and the municipal government [EH Bildu]," they said. "Although the mayor told us his good words and his commitment to guarantee the new Gaztetxe, by not immediately contacting the bishopric, he cut off the relationship and blocked the negotiations," said the Young Assembly.

Attitude of the Church, the City Hall and the parties

Therefore, he pointed out the attitude of both the Church and the City Hall: "On the one hand, because the only response of the bishopric has been the judicial route and, instead of the peace that preaches so much, request the eviction of the place through police violence. And on the other hand, the municipal government, showing a passive attitude after the blockade of the Church and paying less attention to the assembly, because it has perpetuated the blockade of the situation".

In any case, both EH Bildu and the PNV denounced the position of the assembly: "In the face of the problem in the village with the Minor, they do not look and do not position themselves publicly, they keep looking at the elections".

Emptying risk as defined

Gazte Asanblada recalled that the Ertzaintza has identified six young people in the new Gaztetxe, through "violent police violence", and that by "opening a judicial process", they remain at risk of being expelled from the center. "From the Zestoa Youth Assembly, we call on both the municipal government and the Church to unblock the situation and now to solve the Gaztetxe problem, which is responsible for the problem," he added. Members of the Assembly stated that "they will not give up Zestoa until they give the Gaztetxe it deserves".
