Protests against Zero COVID-19 policy in China
  • Thousands of citizens have taken to the streets in major capitals to report the economic and psychological damage caused by the Chinese Government's zero COVID-19 strategy. In demonstrations not seen long ago, protesters show the blank sheet to represent censorship. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the country has more cases of COVID-19 of all time, and authorities say that if measures were taken, millions of people would die.

In China, the population protests increasingly strongly. Angry with the Zero COVID-19 policy, Xi Jinping is launching messages against authority in the most massive protests of the years. In the city of Urumqi, in northwest China, there was a fire on 24 November, in which, due to the closure, ten people died.

This has caused the population to turn more, and on the weekend they have come out in the streets in major cities, not only in Beijing, but also in Shanghai, Nanjing and Wuhan. They call for the elimination of measures taken by the Government against the coronavirus, in particular for economic and psychological damage. Protesters display white pages to denounce the “censorship” of the Xi government and become symbols of protest. The message has been opened at international level for the decline of the Communist Party, but the experts have denied it.

Both demonstrators and international media have condemned police repression. In the meantime, the British BBC reported that a journalist had been detained for seven hours and that the police had beaten him.

What is zero COVID-19?

China chose the zero COVID-19 strategy to remove the virus “as soon as possible”, for which rigorous closures and severe control measures have been established. Every time there is an infection, thousands of people are forced to be confined to the area, many times by the weeks, even by closing entire villages. For example, it's striking that in the world's largest iPhone factory, 200,000 workers have been confined by detecting a dozen contaminations when the factory is closed.

The Government continues to support this strategy by saying that if millions of people would not die, but citizens cannot endure more. It should be noted that China has the worst contamination data ever since the beginning of the pandemic. There are almost two million people in lockdown.
