In addition to the demonstration on Saturday, the movement is organizing protests for the day on which the Zubieta incinerator officially opened, a date on the table on 3 March. At 19:00 hours it has called concentrations in all the towns of Euskal Herria dressed in black and with candles.
EAM referred to what happened at Zaldibar: “For the business of a few, thousands of political leaders who have hid themselves at the time of the crisis have put the health of citizens at risk.” In the words of EAM, Zaldibar has also shown what the path of privatisation is: “It is clear that here the company has the pole of command and that in the Council they are nothing but puppets. Privatization has shown that the garbage mafia has no scruples.”
The movement is concerned that the same can happen in the incinerator: “Who assures us that if we recycle more and more in Gipuzkoa they will not bring waste from outside to burn here? And who, by burning what he smokes, will not harm the health of the citizens? Lorries from the international community were coming to the cavalry to get here what they do not want. How do you accept it? If there is ever a disaster in Zubieta, the authorities will tell us that it is the company’s fault. Do you count to ask Urbaserri from China?”
For selective collection
They claim the existence of alternatives. “The PNV-PSOE tandem never puts the issue of waste in the way of a solution. For 35 years they want to infect us with dioxins and furans from this area and, in addition, they want to bring the waste from Zaldibar to the incinerator in Gipuzkoa. The Zaldibar report has once again shown that in Gipuzkoa and throughout the Basque Country, effective selective collection systems must be implemented. Improvements have been made in many localities in Gipuzkoa.”
It is precisely the movement that has put the spotlight on the municipalities so that they undertake not to send to the Zubieta incinerator any waste they have collected themselves. “The demand is clear: neither in municipalities, nor in municipalities where waste is collected separately, nor in cases where waste is collected correctly, nor in the incineration of our waste”.
Finally, Markel Olano reiterated his request to the MEP of Gipuzkoa, Markel Olano, to explain the contract they have signed with the company.
