Wikipedia, artifacts and artificial (an optimistic view of artificial intelligence)

The year 2022 ended with just over 400,000 articles in Basque on Wikipedia. In addition, in a quality measurement criterion proposed for all Wikipedias, 10,000 fundamental articles and their composition, the Basque language has become the fourth language of these ten thousand and, in terms of its quality, measuring the length of the articles, the set of references and images, placing the Basque language in the 33rd place of the Wikipedia language classification and at the end of the year 23.ean.

Euskera among the languages of the world, 23rd. We know that this is not true, neither in speakers, nor in terms of status, nor in conditions of permanence. However, the 23rd post is not artificial, although, let's face it, it depends on an artifact: it's the one measured by a Wikipedia mechanism, with which we've got a spectacular meter.

Personally, because I have a little hobby to edit Wikipedia, I feel very proud. I invite you to share this little pleasure, be it a wikipedist: how we do many, share some photos or a little knowledge in the local magazine, or on social networks, share it on Wikipedia, and all your knowledge of scope and sustainability, will get a more important echo.

Another form of collaboration is participation in the Cultural Association of Basque Wikilaris. The team in charge of governing. With a fee of 5 euros a year, at least they will not eat you a lot of money, perhaps the time, if you put guests inside the gut to edit the articles.

In a sermon like that of Ttap I commented (and I also wrote in Sustatun) how artificial intelligence, with the creativity or quality it has acquired in the last stage of image creation, can question the term “creator” when we believed that this was beyond the reach of machines. Just like with the images, if ChatGPT also does, we can think that maybe the machines will also create Wikipedia sheets -- well, maybe yes, but there too it will be with human leadership. In fact, one of the keys to the growth of Wikipedia in Euskera has been the integration of neural translators for a couple of years, as is the case of Elia in Euskera, and because of that, thanks to that branch of artificial intelligence, we are becoming part of our work. Not all leaving it to machine translation, but thanks to it. The artifice helps us. What we do is not artificial.

Long live Wikipedia in Basque and the opportunities that open up!
