"The opening of centres in July, instead of bridging the gap, may be the opposite"
  • In the Spanish Government, the possibility of keeping schools open during the summer for pupils in difficulty is still on the table. The Steilas union recalls that the gap is not the current one and asks: "There is a need for profound structural changes and solid, non-cyclical investment," he added.

On 15 April, the Spanish Government announced the form it will take at the end of the course of this year. Provision is made for the possibility of keeping the centres open during summer holidays. The Steilas Education Union states in relation to this possibility: "The opening of the centres in July does not guarantee anything to bridge the gap and may mean the opposite. The excessive tiredness of many students, the desperate feeling of losing the holiday period… Now profound structural changes and strong investment are needed, all of a sudden, to overcome that gap that some have seen, and not the sudden occurrences.”

Stresses that the segregation is not a consequence of the coronavirus: "Segregation situations are not new. The gap is not new and it grows. The pandemic situation has only brought to light and increased the educational emergency. We've been seeing the gap widening for decades as authorities looked away."

Approach to end the course and start the next

Steilas has proposed these measures so that the next school year will end "satisfactorily" and work can begin in the future.
