Sortu called a demonstration in Bilbao on 20 November to demand recognition and responsibility for the victims of the Spanish State on the anniversary of the murders of Santi Brouard and Josu Muguruza. Sortu celebrates every year a demonstration under the motto “The Breath of the People - Force for Independence”. On 20 November, it is 35 years since the "Spanish state terrorism" murdered Basque militants Santi Santi Brouard and Josu Muguruza. The mobilisation will begin at 19:00 in the Brouard consultation and end with a political act in Bilbao New Plaza.
Despite the progress made in the recognition, reparation and accountability of victims by the Spanish State, Sortu has remarked that "there is still a long way to go." "Ours is an oppressed nation, and the crushing Spanish and French projects have for centuries wanted to take our people's breath away," the training said. Sortu underlined that its aim is to "stifle the national liberation movement" and stressed that the murders of Brouard and Muguruza are part of the "dirty war" used by both states.
Sortu has highlighted the need to work towards the construction of a global memory, “whatever the Basque society wants and needs”. To this end, he stressed that we are living at a “decisive moment” and that “the root” of the political conflict must be addressed”. He has appealed to drive the process of national liberation “all of us, the militants, are a breath to reclaim the national claim and place it at the centre.”
