Initiatives against the Guggenheim project in Urdaibai are not suspended
  • Lakua and the Diputación de Bizkaia announced in January the suspension of the Guggenheim project of Urdaibai for two years, but entrepreneurs continue to fight for the museum not to be built. The latest activity of the climate activists Vegetable Future and the tour of the Guernica group to Gernika are witnesses to this.

On the facade of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, members of the Vegetable Future have carried out a red and black painting to denounce the immersion of the Guggenheim Board in the "macro-project that will cause irreversible damage to the natural heritage".

On the other hand, the Guernica Gernika group organised a tour on 16 March, an attempt to spread the project to get to know the STOP Guggenheim-Urdaibai platform firsthand. Departing from the Gernika-Lumo Dalia factory, they move to Murueta. “Let us not let the spring of Urdaibai be spoiled!” the group said.

Strategic plan for the region

In particular, the Basque Government has approved the elaboration of a Strategic Plan for the region of Busturi197-Urdaibai with the objective of “promoting the socio-economic development of the region”. The strategic plan does not mention Guggenheim.

Government spokesman Bingen Zupiria has realised the plan and has never mentioned the controversial project. In the words of Zupiria, the strategic plan was agreed last January by Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu and Bizkaia MP Elixabete Etxanobe.

The Plan is structured into five policy areas: economic activity, training and employment; urban transformation and regeneration; culture and sustainable tourism; mobility and the environment; and basic infrastructure.
