If after the elections there is no government agreement in six months, the North Lrland law says that new elections must be called. On Thursday, the fourth parliamentary session of government was held, and the DUP refused again to appoint the Vice-President of the government and the ministers concerned. According to the 1998 Healthy Friday Agreements, the Government of Northern Ireland must necessarily be established between the Unionist and Irish nationalists, appointing the Prime Minister the winner of the elections.
The DUP says it will not make appointments until the governments of Ireland and the UK modify the Brexit protocol. According to the Good Friday Agreement, in Ireland there would be no spectacular border between north and south, so in order not to compromise the agreement, the European Union, Ireland and the United Kingdom agreed that there would be a customs office between Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom.
The DUP has never accepted it, says that it creates inequalities in its citizenship with the other citizens of the United Kingdom and that if it does not change it, it will refuse to participate in the Government of Northern Ireland. It should also be remembered that in the 2016 referendum the people of Northern Ireland rejected Brexita.
In the view of all parties, the new elections will not help to resolve the situation, but Northern Ireland Secretary of State Chris Heaton-Harris is expected to convene the elections on Friday next December 15. In the meantime, if London intervenes with autonomous power, Sinn Fein has already announced and will accept it.
