After the disappearance of the Udalatx Cross
  • We have read some views in recent days, written on behalf of the people, which are very partial and without taking into account the situation in which we lived in 1971. That is our view.
Mondraberri Juan Ramon Garai Ander Santiago 2024ko urriaren 22a

We believe that we must contextualize the moment when the cross was placed. So when did he get on? 32 years after the implementation of the Dictatorship of the military coup. A dictatorship driven and financed by the factual forces of the military coup, as was said at the time, La Cruz, the Sword and the Sac (hierarchy of the Church, military and repressive forces, large billionaires and landowners, respectively). Who was education dependent on? In the hands of the Catholic Church and Phalanx, of course: Religion and National Spirit. Everything was sin, suppressed sexuality (the sexuality of others, not yours), a holy rosary every day, a hand extended to the church on Sundays…

The placement of the Udalaitz Cross by the initiative of some citizens in 1971 was not a neutral action in our opinion, although they probably do not intend it. In other words, some Mondragonese decided to put a cross of 12 meters in the sight of the people without asking anyone, when we were in a dictatorship and secularism was forbidden. Did you then respect the idea of the lay Mondragonese? We would say no, it was an imposition.

Now, others, now that the Cross is an oppressive power for them, have cut off the Cross. And they've done it at night, because they know that if they did it day, they would be arrested and, probably, in addition to the prison sentence -- there's been the emergence of those who ask for punishment for entrepreneurs.

Have those who put the cross and other citizens been offended by this action? Yes.

And didn't you offend anyone in 1971?

We are dealing with a political act, whether or not I agree. With this action no special symbols have been placed, as in 1971. The three factual forces mentioned above promoted the fascist military coup accepted by those who agreed to the political transition, without demanding any responsibility; and there they remain as if they were saints, when they were criminals. If you ask for a sanction, you can start out there.

Following the death of the dictator, the Spanish State declared itself non-confessional, and it should therefore be forbidden to place any religious symbol on municipal land (in all public lands). Moreover, with the crucible of culture and religion that our people today form. Questions of faith cannot come out of the private sphere, let alone mark the municipal political agenda.

We are a secular people, we must respect the beliefs of all, those of believers and those of the laity. And right now, we think it's the right thing to go down that road.

The arguments for the relocation of the Udalatx Cross are the nineteenth-century speeches closest to God and the old law; or, if not, those that are built with the idea that what is valid to fight against political opponents. Amazing.

From alternation, over and above messianic demands, we defend and defend a sovereign and secular Basque Republic. We will always strive for the disappearance of traditions that violate the rights of the people, people, animals and the environment.

So, if we don't want to offend anyone, we put neutral or agreed symbols in shared and public places.
