The Summer Ecological Fairs have made a date to enjoy the summer harvest, in meetings organized between various associations to promote quality organic products. It is organised by local consumption groups and regional associations in favour of organic production, such as Bionekazaritza de Álava, Ekolur de Bizkaia and Biolur de Gipuzkoa. They have already been in Vitoria-Gasteiz and Elorrio, and they will be in another twelve localities until the end of October.
The promoters recalled that 30 years ago, with the organic product discarded, fairs were essential, as they were important selling points for farmers and livestock farmers. Today the situation has improved, and they say that fairs are more than empty selling spaces and meeting spaces and promotion of the agroecological model.
They value the relationship between producers and citizens, and remember that markets are, above all, important to small producers; live selling is the mainstay of many of them. They are therefore challenged to attract as many people as possible to buy in the following ecological markets: “Each purchase option is an opportunity to promote positive change. Select products that promote sustainability, social justice and equity. As consumers we have the key to promoting a fairer, healthier and more sustainable production and consumption system”, the members of the Basque Council of Agriculture and Organic Food reiterated.
