Searching for the Best Chatbot
  • In recent years, the development of artificial intelligence (AI) has had a significant impact on the situation of minority languages. The main models developed by the technology giants, such as ChatGPT, are trained in the main languages, which entails the risk of leaving aside languages such as Basque. However, in the Basque Country there is an initiative that seeks to combat it: HiTZ has launched an initiative to develop an open chatbot system in Basque.

The HiTZ centre has been conducting experiments over the past year to create an open model of artificial intelligence in Basque. The aim is not only to create a chat model, but also to incorporate knowledge about the Basque language and culture. This is not an easy challenge, as the amount of data in Basque is much smaller compared to the more hegemonic languages. For this reason, community participation is essential to ensure the success of the project.

In fact, HiTZ has put them in the evaluation phase of the first prototypes developed using the different technologies and free models available, for which they have prepared a platform: https://ebaluatoia.hitz.eus/.

In it, users can evaluate the responses to chatbots, helping them decide which one is best. Through this process, they hope to improve the quality of the Basque model and identify the most suitable one.

To ensure the digital survival of the Basque language, it is important to focus on these types of initiatives. The people who will develop the technology, as well as the institutions that bet on it, will be essential to activate the participation of the Basque community, both in this case and in the future.

Initiatives such as the HiTZ Center show that there are our own ways of not relying on giant technologies and that we only have to walk through them. The development of open models allows to take steps in technological sovereignty, which opens the possibility of a more prosperous digital future of the Basque language.

Between February 3 and 17, users will have the opportunity to participate in the evaluation, and HiTZ expects the community to contribute as much as possible. The digital future of Basque is in everyone’s hands and it is essential to take steps to ensure the presence of language in new technologies.

Participants will also have the opportunity to win a special prize in the draw that will take place on March 4th.Help improve artificial intelligence.
